Tips for Overweight Walkers
Being heavy can make walking a bit harder, but it doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying it. Here are tips for overweight walkers.
- Walk on as soft a surface as possible. Many high-school tracks are cushioned. Or you can find wood chip-covered nature trails, rather than concrete or asphalt surfaces. (Some people walk on the grass beside the sidewalk, rather than on the concrete itself.)
- Make a habit of stretching your calves and hamstrings immediately after walking.
- Look for durability and cushioning in your shoes. Don't settle for a cheap, casual walking shoe. It won't have enough support for a heavier walker. Look for a higher-end, brand-name shoe that has polyurethane mid-soles and is designed for stability (especially important to overweight walkers).
Walking is a great exercise for severely overweight people. By following these tips, you put yourself in the best position for sticking to this surprisingly healthful exercise.
