Walking is an excellent way to maintain weight loss. But how much do you have to walk to lose or maintain your weight?
Numerous studies have addressed this question. Most of them conclude that you need to burn about 1600 calories a week if you want to fit into the same size clothes ten years from now.
But 1600 calories is just a number. The question is, how much work is required to burn those 1600 calories?
A person weighing 130 pounds will burn 320 calories by walking four miles in an hour. (That's a fast walk. The average person's pace is only 3 miles per hour.) Doing such a walk five times a week will burn a total of 1600 calories. That is the target: an hour a day, five times a week. To keep it really simple, let's say 20 miles per week.
